FIRST EVER BODY PAINTING AND PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION COMES TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
LOS ANGELES (March 16, 2015) – More than 30 body paint artists, photographers and judges from around the world will converge for the first ever body painting and photography competition in Southern California, Saturday, May 16 at The Springs in the downtown Los Angeles Arts District. The Body Fine Art Competition (#BFALA2015), hosted by modern burlesque artists the Boulet Brothers, will feature live body painting, a competition catwalk, dance group Bijoulette, live music from Robbie Fitzimmons and DJ sets by DJ Wolfie, Uru Majik and iPunx. Celebrity judges include host of KCRW-FM’s ‘Morning Becomes Eclectic’ Jason Bentley, CEO and Founder of the World Body Painting Festival Alex Barendregt, world renowned body paint artist Filippo Ioco and world champion body painter and GSNTV’s Skin Wars judge Craig Tracy.
“The Body Fine Art Competition raises awareness for an emerging and fast-growing art form – the second oldest visual art in the world next to drawing in the dirt,” says world champion body painter Craig Tracy, an event judge from New Orleans and owner of the world’s first art gallery dedicated to fine art body painted images. Tracy is also judge/co-producer of GSNTV’s highly rated show Skin Wars, a body painting reality competition show.
When doors open at 7:00pm, audiences will explore each artist workstation up close and personal as they watch the competition unfold; body and face painting will be offered to attendees as a variety of high-energy entertainers including glow performers will roam the venue. Gourmet healthy food options and organic wine and beer selections will be available.
Body painting is an ancient art form seen in the cultures of indigenous people worldwide and has become a popular art form in Europe where a festival organized by the World Body Painting Association (WBPA) is held every year in Austria. Body Fine Art’s first Southern California event of its kind is supported by the WBPA, an alliance for body paint artists and models.
The art of body painting is a way of illustrating the energetic, psychological and spiritual activity below the surface of the skin. “Sacred Body,” the theme of this year’s competition, offers artists the opportunity to explore the vast possibilities of representing the mysteries that lie beneath the exterior of the human form, as well as the inherent beauty of the human body.
“We’re excited to bring the body painting community and the world’s best artists together under one roof,” says festival curator Nicolette Spear. “Once I discovered a lack of events like these on the West Coast, even when they are so popular in other parts of the world, I became obsessed with launching the Body Fine Art Competition here.”
Featured artists competing for the grand prize include Dewayne Flowers of Flesh and Colors who has amassed a social media following over 100,000 strong. Cheryl Ann Lipstreau was awarded the 2013 grand prize at the Emerging Artists International Body Painting Competition for Living Art America. Also competing is body painting legend and accomplished graffiti artist Wiser Oner whose clients have included NBC, Clear Channel, Playboy, Absolut, Bacardi, Ed Hardy, Tapout, Penn and Teller and more. Event hosts the Boulet Brothers are well known on the Los Angeles party scene. Aside from producing events such as Dragula and Miss Kitty’s Parlour, the duo presents a high style, comedic, modern take on burlesque. Bijoulette is a fully interactive sexy, clowny, sophisticated dance troop. Music will be provided by solo artist Robbie Fitzsimmons who has a song on Lana Del Rey’s newest album, and after-party DJ sets featuring DJ Wolfie, Uru Majik and iPunx. The Springs is a hub for health-conscious wellness-seeking, foodie Angelenos featuring an organic beer and wine bar, a raw vegan restaurant, juice bar, wellness center and yoga studio.
